Validation of the German version of the ‘Hypogonadism Related Symptom Scale’ (HRS) in andrological patients with infertility, HIV infection and metab…
2013
Summary As commonly used self-reported screening instruments for male hypogonadism demonstrated lack of specificity, a Hypogonadism Related Symptom Scale (HRS) was developed in 2009 as a novel self-rating screening tool. As the questionnaire has not been validated, the purpose of our study was to perform a validation in patients presenting with different disorders (e.g. infertility, HIV infection or metabolic syndrome) and disease-related risk to develop hypogonadism. Two hundred and eighteen patients aged 19–71 years (40.1 ± 9.5) who completed the HRS and other common questionnaires [International Index Of Erectile Function (IIEF), National Institutes of Health Chronic Prostatitis Symptom …
The effects of 12-week progressive strength training on strength, functional capacity, metabolic biomarkers, and serum hormone concentrations in heal…
2018
Previous findings suggest that performing strength training (ST) in the evening may provide greater benefit for young individuals. However, this may not be optimal for the older population. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of a 12-week ST program performed in the morning vs. evening on strength, functional capacity, metabolic biomarker and basal hormone concentrations in older women. Thirty-one healthy older women (66 ± 4 years, 162 ± 4 cm, 75 ± 13 kg) completed the study. Participants trained in the morning (M) (07:30, n = 10), in the evening (E) (18:00, n = 10), or acted as a non-training control group (C) (n = 11). Both intervention groups performed whole-body strengt…
Gonadotropin Secretion in Eugonadotropic Human Males and Postmenopausal Females Under Long Term Application of a Potent Analog of Gonadotropin-Releas…
1978
Long-acting analogs are of special interest in long-term treatment with gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). However, inhibitory effects of agonist analogs on gonadotropin secretion or on reproductive processes have been observed in rats as well as in human males. Since these inhibitory effects seem to be dose-related, we checked the findings for d-Leu 6 -des-Gly 10 -GnRH-ethylamide within the dose range proposed by us for treatment. In six eugonadotropic human males, a significant decrease of luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone responsiveness to a standard dose of GnRH and significant decrease of testosterone basal secretion were observed after 2 and 4weeks of subcutaneo…
A 20-year follow-up of young women with polycystic ovary syndrome.
2012
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether hormonal, metabolic, and anthropomorphic parameters change over 20 years in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). METHODS: One hundred ninety-three women with PCOS, aged 20–25 years, were diagnosed according to Rotterdam criteria, divided into four phenotypes (A–D), and followed at 5-year intervals for 20 years. Androgens, gonadotropins, insulin, glucose, body mass index, waist circumference, and ovarian volume were measured. RESULTS: At diagnosis, 57% had classic features (phenotype A), 9% had classic features without ovarian findings (phenotype B), 26% had the ovulatory phenotype (C), and 7% were nonhyperandrogenic (D). After 10 years, androgens decr…
Hormonal and metabolic adaptation to fasting: effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarianaxis and reproductive performance of rabbit does
2006
To assess the impact of acute caloric shortage on reproduction, rabbit does were either fed ad libitum (control, AL), or fasted for 24 (STF) or 48 h (LTF) before induction of ovulation with GnRH injection. Blood samples were collected during the last 3 h of fasting, and the following 4 h after GnRH injection, when feed was provided again, to measure plasma concentrations of LH, estradiol-17β, leptin, insulin, T3, corticosterone, glucose, and NEFA. Before re-feeding, plasma leptin, insulin, and T3 concentrations were lower (P ≤ 0.01) in both fasted groups than in controls, but then gradually increased following realimentation to match those of controls. During fasting, corticoster…
Effects of Environmental Lighting and Tryptophan Devoid Diet on the Rat Vaginal Cycle
1998
Cerebral serotonin level influences luteinizing hormone release and, consequently, ovulation. The present study evaluated the effects of precooked maize meal (polenta), a diet almost devoid of tryptophan the serotonin precursor on the alterations of the estrus cycle as measured by vaginal smears analysis in Wistar rats. Several conditions of environmental lighting were used in order to modify ovarian cycle: 1) natural alternating light/dark cycle; 2) continuous darkness; 3) continuous light by sodium steams: 4) continuous light by fluorescent neon tubes. Rats bred in continuous lighting showed estrus-proestrus rate significantly greater than rats bred in normal lighting or in continuous dar…
Effects of subchronic paroxetine administration on night-time endocrinological profiles in healthy male volunteers
2000
Abstract To evaluate the subchronic effects of paroxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, on nocturnal endocrinological profiles, eight healthy male volunteers with no personal or family history of a psychiatric or neurological disease were administered paroxetine (30 mg/day) or placebo in a double-blind cross-over design. Drugs were given as a single dose at 10:00 h for a period of 4 weeks each. Between days 21 and 28 of each treatment period, sleep EEG was registered for four consecutive nights from 23:00 to 07:00 h. During the last night, hormonal profiles for prolactin, growth hormone (GH), cortisol, corticotropin (ACTH), luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone and melatonin w…
Neuromuscular and hormonal adaptations in athletes to strength training in two years.
1988
Neuromuscular and hormonal adaptations to prolonged strength training were investigated in nine elite weight lifters. The average increases occurred over the 2-yr follow-up period in the maximal neural activation (integrated electromyogram, IEMG; 4.2%, P = NS), maximal isometric leg-extension force (4.9%, P = NS), averaged concentric power index (4.1%, P = NS), total weight-lifting result (2.8%, P less than 0.05), and total mean fiber area (5.9%, P = NS) of the vastus lateralis muscle, respectively. The training period resulted in increases in the concentrations of serum testosterone from 19.8 +/- 5.3 to 25.1 +/- 5.2 nmol/l (P less than 0.05), luteinizing hormone (LH) from 8.6 +/- 0.8 to 9…
Effects of a ketogenic diet in overweight women with polycystic ovary syndrome.
2019
Abstract Background Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in women during reproductive age. It is characterised clinically by oligo-ovulation or anovulation, hyper-androgenism, and the presence of polycystic ovaries. It is associated with an increased prevalence of metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. The onset of PCOS has been associated to several hereditary and environmental factors, but insulin resistance plays a key pathogenetic role. We sought to investigate the effects of a ketogenic diet (KD) on women of childbearing age with a diagnosis of PCOS. Methods Fourteen overweight women with diagnosis of PCOS underwent to a ketoge…
Testosterone metabolism in patients with advanced carcinoma of the prostate: a comparative in vivo study of the effects of oestrogen and antiprolacti…
1978
In the light of the high incidence of cardiovascular side effects with oestrogen therapy in patients with prostatic cancer, other medications altering androgen metabolism are under investigation. The influence of the anti-prolactin bromocriptine (CB154) on plasma kinetics of testosterone and on endogenous hormones was studied and compared with the effect of ethinyl oestradiol in 25 patients with prostatic carcinoma. Bromocriptine significantly suppressed both prolactin and testosterone, inhibited the transfer of androgen from the inner pool into the deep compartment and favoured its degradation. Ethinyl oestradiol decreased testosterone, LH and FSH, and prolonged the biological half-life of…
